What is functionalism?

Functionalism

A core feature of of this theory is that the adaptive value of any behavior can be found if the behavior is viewed in the context of its environment. Deviant behavior may serve a protective function for the family. Symptoms are viewed as signs that the family is not adapting well to the environment, or, the environment is unable to meet the family's needs.
