By the time a child is a preteen, s/he is able to understand the differences between parents in divorce. A preteen may even demand an explanation about who was right and who was wrong. They tend to side very strongly with one parent or the other. If you are the parent that has been targeted as the "bad parent" -- just wait a week or two -- the preteen's emotional responses are as shifting as the tides of the ocean! Your ex may be the "bad parent" the week after next...
