How do I manage a child with ADD/ADHD in the classroom?

ADD/ADHD in the Classroom (part 5)

ADD/ADHD in the Classroom: Tips 41-50

41. Warn the child in advance when transitioning to
give plenty of time for the child to adapt. For
example, "You have 5 minutes before we go to
lunch." "You now have 2 minutes before we go to
lunch. Start thinking about completing your work."
"You now have 1 minute before lunch. Finish up
what you are doing and stop."

42. Remind the child to check over his/her own work to
see that it is the best they can do and not just
rushed and careless -- teach them to self monitor
the excellence of their work.

43. Assign an "assignment buddy", or a peer who can
help the child check over his or her work for
errors.

44. Teach the child to self monitor his/her own
behavior, recording the behavior in a log. This
helps the child become aware of their behavior in
a positive way and takes the work load off of you.

45. Assign special responsibilities that allows the child to look positive in front of others.
46. Teach the child to learn to organize their own items in cubby, on work space -- sometimes a picture mat of where items should sit helps.

47. Establish eye contact before giving a direction -- do not start without eye contact and full attention.
48. Give the child assignments that require movement (e.g., run a note to the office, wash the board).
49. Use the child's strengths, pointing out to peers the child's strengths (e.g., the best runner, the best at throwing balls).

50. Teach problem solving thinking during the teachable moment and in structured social lessons (social situations where alternative behaviors can be discussed and taught). For example, show pictures of children doing inappropriate behavior and have the class discuss the situation and alternative behaviors the child could have done that would be acceptable.
