ADD/ADHD in the Classroom (part 3)

ADD/ADHD in the Classroom: Tips 31-40

31. Send positive notes home. Parents with children
with ADD/ADHD hear more "bad" than "good" about
their child.

32. Take a few minutes each day to talk with the child
on a personal level.

33. Encourage social interaction when child withdraws.
34. Give plenty of positive reinforce when the child
appears frustrated.

35. Look for signs of stress building up in the child
and teach the child to recognize his/her own
signs.

36. Teach coping skills to child (e.g., go to another
area, tell an adult, use calming strategies).

35. Allow the child to vent anxiety, hyperactivity,
anger, or frustration in appropriate ways (e.g.,
kicking a ball, going into another room and
yelling).

36. Keep free play and outside time unstructured so
child can work out energy.

37. Replace inappropriate behavior with appropriate
(can't run in school, but can run on the
playground).

38. Use a notebook for communication from school to
home and back. I call this "both ends against the
middle". It is an extremely effective technique.

39. Allow child to stand at work times.

40. Provide child with 'short breaks' between
activities. A good rule of thumb is 20 minutes of
work with a 5 minute "active" break.
