March 5, 2004, Newsletter Issue #118: To Give or Not To Give

Tip of the Week

Yes, there is etiquette on gift giving. If someone asks to not exchange gifts any longer and the other person refuses, the refusing person has the right to continue to give gifts and the person not wanting to give gifts is no longer obligated to do the same. The person deciding not to give a gift should not harbor feelings of guilt. If you are concerned about the relationship with this person, you might suggest that instead of giving gifts, the two of you exchange a service, or have lunch with each other, or something simple to replace the gift giving.
