There are more step-fathers than step-mothers in the world today because most mothers retain custody of their children upon divorce. Step-mothers often are portrayed negatively, such as in the case of the wicked old step-mother of Cinderella. Step-fathers are also not expected to be as nurturing as a step-mother simply because our society looks at nurturing as a female role more than a male role.
