In the 1960s, Ainsworth developed a method for assessing the attachment behaviors. From these studies, Ainsworth identified four types of attachment patterns: Secure - the infant seeks out the caregiver when distressed, is easily comforted upon the caregiver return, and maintains close contact with the caregiver. Insecure-Ambivalent - the infant is excessively distressed by the separation, difficult to soothe upon return, and resisted the caregivers comforting attempts. Insecure-Avoidant - the infant seems disinterested in the caregiver and rejects them upon return.
