October 16, 2009, Newsletter Issue #307: Ainsworth & Attachment Theory
1
Tip of the Week
Jane Ainsworth described the attachment as occurring in five phases or steps:
1)undiscriminating - the infant uses attachment behaviors for no real social purpose; 2) differentiating - the infant knows and prefers a caregiver over others and begins using the innate attachment behaviors to attract and keep the caregiver within close proximity; 3) separation anxiety - the infant is noticably upset when the chosen (or primary) caregiver leaves and calms when the caregiver returns; 4) active initiation - the infant protests when separated and actively pursues the caregiver (i.e. approaching, calling out for, following); and, 5) stranger anxiety - the infant becomes uncomfortable with strangers.
